Sheperd Integrative Dermatology’s beautiful office design was inspired by the “Living Building
Challenge.”
The Living Building Challenge is a building certification program, advocacy tool and philosophy
that defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment. Inspired by
the program, Sheperd Integrative Dermatology, incorporated elements from the Challenge’s
seven performance areas or “petals” to make the wellness center’s physical environment
congruent with this philosophy on sustainability.
Below, you will find a list of the seven petal and unique building features that were incorporated into the project design to minimize its environmental impact and improve the quality of life for our practice and community.
Place Petal: Restore a healthy inter-relationship with nature.
Our permeable parking lot reduces stormwater runoff volume
Our gardens are bee-safe environments with beehives located throughout our gardens. Ask us about our organic honey!
A bike rack was installed to encourage alternative modes of transportation to our office. Fun fact:
Patients receive a $5.00 discount if they walk or ride a bike to their appointment. We proudly met zero net impact goals throughout the cleaning of the property for construction. Our team worked with Charleston County to plan one tree for every tree removed.
Water Petal: Net positive water use Sheperd Integrative Dermatology leverages rain barrels to capture and recycle water for irrigation
Each restroom contains Dyson Airblade Wash+Dry faucets designed for water (and power!) conservation.
Energy Petal: Net positive energy use the entire practice is powered by solar panels and LED lighting one of the most recognized components of Sheperd Integrative Dermatology is our large, beautiful windows. All windows are specialty, energy-efficient windows designed to conserve power, heating and air-conditioning.
Health & Happiness Petal: Optimize Wellness Sheperd Integrative Dermatology is committed to leveraging our buildings and gardens for community use. We frequently lend our space to experts to host workshops and unique community gatherings designed to inspire and delight the free concert series “Music for the Trees” each summer in our Labyrinth Windows in almost every room to connect the inside to nature for restorative healing. During the course of construction, only non-toxic insulation was used. Furniture located in the Discovery room and throughout the building is sustainably crafted and toxin-free. Vanguard and Masaya & Co furniture
Equity Petal: Supporting a just and equitable world, our building is safe, ADA compliant and accessible for every member of our community annual program to offer breast cancer survivors free scar treatments
